How to get a marriage license in Houston

In addition to planning for a photographer, videographer, caterer, limousine, officiant, reception hall, and the endless list of other items on your wedding to-do list; you will also need to purchase a marriage license. It is a relatively easy process, but since most of those needing a marriage license have never gone through the process, here are facts you will need to know as well as locations in Harris County where you can get your marriage license.

It would be great if the day after you and your fiancé were engaged you could go down to the courthouse and pick up your license. Unfortunately there is a time frame for the license. You must get the license within 30 days of your wedding date, but no less than 72 hours prior. Certain exceptions, most notably military causes, can lead to a waiver of the 72 hour requirement.

The two of you will need to bring a state issued identification card such as a driver’s license, passport, resident alien card, or a state issued id card. You will also need $36 cash. If one of you cannot be there it is possible to request a license with an Absent Application. This form must be filled out and notarized when you go to purchase the marriage license. You must be 18 to marry, although with parental consent the required age is reduced to 14. You do not need to bring witnesses and there is no blood test requirement.

To purchase your license you must go to the main Harris County office or one of the eight branch offices listed below. You may also go to any other county office as marriage licenses issued by any county in Texas are valid in any other county.

Once you have your license and are within the 3 to 30 day window you are legally ready to be married. For the marriage to be legally valid you must be married by either a licensed or ordained Christian minister or priest, a Jewish rabbi, or a judge or justice.
